Changing of the Guard- Greetings from the New Editor in Chief

Medical Mycology. We will continue to have two Editor’s Choice papers in each issue, and these too will be freely accessible. The rapidly changing arena of medical sciences and new technologies that could only be dreamed of just a few short years ago makes this an exciting and dynamic time to be a scientist. Similarly, we as Editors recognize the need to be dynamic in how Medical Mycology is viewed by authors for the topics and types of manuscripts we will publish. To that end, the editorial team has revised the Scope of the journal, which follows at the end of my editorial. We are also in the process of reviewing and revising the styles and formats for review articles and for papers that have been called Short Communications. As we come to mutual agreement on these issues we will revise the Instructions to Authors. We will also place a PDF of these onto the journal webpage for authors to download and have handy when writing a manuscript. The success of any journal depends on many things. Most importantly, the journal depends on the submission of high-quality manuscripts and we encourage each of you to seriously consider submission to Medical Mycology. In addition, the team of Editors and Editorial Board members, as well as the ad hoc reviewers of papers are critical to the success of a journal. I can assure everyone that the Editors and Editorial Board members are quality scientists and do their very best to not only assure the quality of the papers we publish, but also to provide the authors of submitted papers fair, critical and useful reviews of the papers. Let me express my gratitude to the many individuals that selflessly give of their time and expertise on behalf of Medical Mycology. We are always searching for people willing to perform critical and useful reviews. Thus, I would like to put out a call for reviewers to generate a list of our colleagues that are willing to review papers. If you are interested and willing, please contact me and provide your area of expertise. It is a good way to learn and become more familiar with the publication process. Let me close by saying I look forward to the task at hand in continuing the work of the Editors in Chief that have preceded me. I will endeavor to make Medical Mycology

My name is Karl V. Clemons, PhD, and I am the newly appointed Editor in Chief of ISHAM’s venerable journal, Medical Mycology. Thus, I am writing in my new role to apprise ISHAM members and our readership of this, as well as about news and plans concerning Medical Mycology. Before addressing those aspects, I wish to say a few words about Dr. Ira F. Salkin, who has retired from the position of Editor in Chief after 12 years of outstanding service to the journal and ISHAM. I believe that all ISHAM members and our readers of Medical Mycology owe Dr. Salkin a debt of thanks for his efforts to assure that Medical Mycology continued to be a high-quality publication and improved with each year of his tenure as the Editor in Chief. For those of you able to attend the General Assembly at the recent ISHAM in Melbourne, you were treated first-hand to Dr. Salkin’s creativity and wit, as well as his devotion to ISHAM and Medical Mycology. Dr. Salkin has been a friend and supporter of mine for many years, and I have learned much from him. So please join me in wishing Dr. Salkin well in his retirement from the position. Although a daunting task, our goals revolve around continuing to improve the quality of Medical Mycology as a whole to make it the premier journal for the publication of papers dealing with all aspects of medically related fungi and the diseases they cause. We seek to solicit the submission of top quality papers from all areas of medical mycology, which will increase the number of citations of published papers, and consequently the journal’s impact factor and other journal metrics. We also seek to improve the overall experience of publication in Medical Mycology by significantly shortening our time to first decision and have new time guidelines in place for our Editors, Reviewers, and our publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP). We will actively be working toward increasing our readership and visibility in clinical and basic sciences at international and local meetings with increased marketing by OUP. With the explosion of new journals in the past few years, all of these aspects are needed to make our journal stand above the rest. In conjunction with OUP, the journal archives are now free to access after 12 months from the publication date back through 1998. I am extremely pleased to be able to tell everyone this news, as it will help raise the profile of

the best journal it can become. With your help we can attain this goal. Best regards to all,

Case reports are no longer accepted. In addition, studies of natural products showing inhibitory activity against pathogenic fungi are not accepted without chemical characterization and identification of the compounds responsible for the inhibitory activity. The articles published in Medical Mycology are intended to provide comprehensive information about areas at the forefront of mycological research and therapy, as well as reference concepts for use by medical and veterinary mycologists, microbiologists, clinicians, medical technologists, epidemiologists, mycotoxicologists and environmental specialists.
