Celebrating the ACP Centennial: From the Annals Archive
D
uring the 2015 centennial year of the American College of Physicians, publisher of Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals editors will link an article in each issue with an earlier paper from our archives addressing the same disease or clinical question. We hope our readers find this interesting and we welcome comments, especially from physicians who were practicing at the time of publication of the original paper who might offer insight into the impact of the earlier paper on their knowledge or practice. In the first half of the 20th century, aspergillosis was an infrequent infection usually confined to the lungs. After the introduction of chemotherapy for leukemia and other hematologic malignancies at mid-century, more cases of disseminated aspergillosis were reported in the setting of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and broad-spectrum antibiotic use (1). In 2015, mortality from disseminated aspergillosis remains unacceptably high. In this issue, Marr and col-
leagues (2) report the results of a randomized clinical trial comparing voriconazole with a combination of voriconazole and anidulafungin for the treatment of disseminated aspergillosis in patients with hematologic malignancy and hematopoietic cell transplantation.
