Correspondence Cataract Surgery in Patients with Nanophthalmos Dear Editor: We read with great interest the article by Steijns et al.1 They have reported visual outcomes and complications of cataract surgery in the largest case series of patients with nanophthalmos. We would like to highlight a major point related to the methodology and the correctness of describing the whole series as having “nanophthalmos.” The classic definition by Duke-Elder of a nanophthalmic eye is one having about two thirds the normal volume with a typical axial length (AL) of 16.0 to 18.5 mm with moderate to high axial hyperopia, small cornea, shallow anterior chamber, marked iris convexity, late-onset glaucoma, and occasional macular hypoplasia.2 However, today nanophthalmos and microphthalmos are defined primarily by short AL with values ranging from
