and fauces. The eye was in a high inflammatory condition ; but there was no alteration then apparent in the color of the iris or the shape of the pupil. On the 10th of the month the conjunctiva was enormously injected, and there was a zone of red vessels on sclerotic close to cornea. On the 11th and 12th the symptoms were much increased in severity; the aqueous liumor had lost its transparency, and the eye looked muddy ; the color of iris altered ; the pupil irregular in shape. 13th and 14th.?? Yellowish and brownish nodules of lymph scattered over the surface of the iris, the disease making rapid progress. On the 15th there appeared to be rapid disorganization, which would, it was supposed, lead to permanent opacity ; up to this date the usual remedies, such as calomel and opium, belladonna,counter-irritants, stimulating and soothing lotions, purgatives, &c., &c., had all been tried in vain ; and the eye was considered to be entirely destroyed. All the foregoing remedies were discontinued, and on the morning of the 16th I was induced to try, as a last resource, the effect of balsam copaibae, having heard of the good effects produced from its use on several cases of eye diseases in this country ; jij were, therefore, ordered to be given three times a day in mucilage (the poppy head fomentations alone being continued). On the 18th he expressed himself freer from pain than he had been since his admission. On the 19th and 20tli the balsam copaibse was applied round the orbit; can distinguish the hand and fingers. 22nd. Sight improving; pus becoming rnpidly absorbed; remains free from pain. On the 24th, could see the length of the ward, and had so far recovered on the 5tli of this month that lie was able to distinguish small objects at a considerable distance. The balsam coparbse lias acted like a charm in his case. July 8th.?Is now convalescent; the iris has resumed its natural color, but there still exists some irregularity of pupil. All treatment omitted. The patient in question has had repeated attacks of syphilis, and was only discharged from hospital for the last attack on the 2oth May last.
