CASE OF LAlt

GONORRHOEA, FOLLOWED BY A ItOSEOERUPTION, NOT DEPENDING ON THE USE

OF COPAIBA. By S.

gonorrhoea in March I860, and was discharged apparently well on the 10th of April ; on 21st he felt feverish and complained of headache, and now noticed that his arms and chest were covered with an eruption of a pink color. On the 6th of May he came to hospital, complaining of severe frontal headache. Skin cool ; pulse quiet; tongue clean ; appetite good. He is covered with an eruption of a bright rose color, which is best marked on the chest and arms, and consists of irregularly shaped patches varying from quarter of an inch to one inch in diameter, and slightly elevated above the surrounding skill. A few are distinct, but most of them run one into the other; they are brightest during the heat of the day, fading perceptibly at J. E. contracted

night.

This man suffered from primary syphilis in 1863 ; but from the color and appearance of the present eruption, the absence of constitutional symptoms, and his remarkably healthy appearance, I do not think this can be looked upon as a case of secondary

syphilis. As during

the time he was under treatment for gonorrhoea he did not show any symptoms whatever of chancre in the urethra, I look upon this as a case in which the constitutional effects of gonorrhoea have been developed. As the eruption seen in such cases has been frequently attributed to the use of copaiba, I have thought the case worthy of record, as the man was treated solely by injections, nor could he possibly have taken balsam, as there was none in hospital at the time. baths and occasional aperients, the and had quite disappeared in one month after its first appearance. He has enjoyed excellent health up to the present time. Under the use of

warm

eruption gradually faded,
