month ago a man, named Chunder, aged 34, of Cliandal caste, came to the Charitable Dispensary of Narail to place himself for surgical aid under my care for some foreign body in the lower part of his rectum. On admission, the patient gave no history of having swallowed any foreign body either with With the exception food or in any other w;iy. of having a piercing pain, which attacked him three days before admission, lie was healthy, and used to do his usual work. After putting the patient on his back, I explored his rectum with my left index finger, when I could feel some hard substance, having the shape of an iron needle, just across the rectal canal with both its ends penetrating to some extent into its wall, the slightest movement in any way causing the patient a sharp piercing and lancinating pain. To relieve the patient of his agony, I was obliged to dilate the anal orifice and rectum by a lithotomy forceps, having 110 other suitable instrument at hand, and entrusted it to my assistant. Afterwards I took a long forceps, and with great difficulty I got hold of one end of the needle, and made it longitudinal along the rectal canal, and brought it out by a sudden pull through the anal orifice. The foreign body appeared to be a regular sewing needle 2\ inches long and having a thickness such as is used in obstetric binders. The medical interest in this case is, that the patient never gave any history of swallowing anything like a needle in his life, nor is it possible that any outsider put a needle through the anus into the rectum. It must have passed the whole length ol the alimentary canal from the mouth to the point in question, and in a longitudinal direction, all along its way without some piercing any part of the tract, and at last About
