A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Cardiovascular Pathology: A New Journal for an Old Need

The advent of a new journal is always an exciting event for those people involved with its genesis: the editor, the editorial board, the publisher, and the sponsoring society, if any. On the other hand, for many people the reaction is precisely that expressed to me by a prominent cardiovascular pathologist with some exasperation: “What do we need another journal for?” At first glance, this is a reasonable question. There are certainly many journals in the fields of experimental and human pathology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and atherosclerosis that publish cardiovascular pathology papers. But with the growth of cardiovascular pathology as a recognized discipline, and with the growth and acceptance of the Society For Cardiovascular Pathology as a representative of that discipline, it seemed to be the appropriate time to establish a journal as the Official Journal of the Society. More importantly, many colleagues have felt a real need for a medium to publish their quality clinical and experimental cardiovascular pathology papers, where they can be read in context by an international audience of peers and others interested in the field. Our goal is to be recognized as the journal of record for cardiovascular pathology; the journal whose papers are cited as definitive; the journal where publication of a paper imparts an immediate cachet of quality to the work; the journal that is the first choice of authors who are considering submission of their manuscripts. Thus, here we are, the first issue of what we hope and expect will be a long and distinguished history of publication. Who are we? Or rather, who or what is cardiovascular pathology, and by extension the journal that has taken the name of the discipline? Some of these very questions are addressed in the editorial immediately following, written by Dr. Margaret Billingham, who is certainly one of the most internationally recognized and justifiably respected members of our profession. We are, in fact, a diverse group of pathologists and morphologists with a wide range of interests, who have as a central focus the investigation of disease

(and its pathophysiology, etiology, and pathogenesis) of the heart and blood vessels. CardiovascuZur Pathology will reflect the entire spectrum of our discpline from vascular pathobiology to mechanical valvular prostheses, from molecular biology to clinical cardiac disease, from experimental ischemia to descriptive gross morphology, to enumerate a few areas. The primary editorial objective is to publish disease-oriented morphological and pathological papers from pathologists and nonpathologist investigators in the cardiovascular field. Certainly, a perusal of our international Editorial Board will give some indication of the depth and breadth of the diverse interests of these distinguished members who will play an active role in determining the direction and quality of this journal. They are broadly representative of cardiovascular pathology, both in regard to their expertise and their geographic location. The Journal will publish timely, informative reviews on important scientific areas in cardiovascular pathology. In addition to proffered manuscripts of clinical and experimental investigations, the Journal will also publish case reports that represent significant or unique observations. Our collaboration with Elsevier Science Publishing Co., Inc. will guarantee the highest technical quality, the certainty of timely publication, and the widest possible international distribution. It is our hope and expectation that the Journal will rapidly expand from its initial quarterly schedule, to a bimonthly and monthly journal within a few years. Since this growth will be dependent on an acceptance of the science in these pages to be of the highest quality, the readership and the submitting authors should be aware that all manuscripts will be edited stringently, with all submissions peer reviewed. We also pledge to provide as rapid a turn-around time as is feasible for the review process. Thus, the response to the question posed at the beginning of this editorial is: “Yes, another journal is needed, and the

need for that journal is becoming ever greater.” We aim to be the definitive journal in the field of cardiovascular pathology. Ultimately, we will need your support, both as readers and submitters of manuscripts; this we do not request, but

expect to earn. We look forward to a successful genesis and maturation. Stephen M. Factor, Editor-in-Chief
