Among the actions to be taken, the strategic plan commits the BVA to reviewing its governance structure to make it more effective and transparent, clarify its relationship with its divisions, and keep pace with changes in the profession and wider society. The Association will also build on the success of its non-stun slaughter campaign to develop a proactive campaigning agenda and increase the BVA’s visibility. The strategic plan has been developed to ‘drive the Association forward over the next three years’. The BVA says that, in response to its member research exercise ‘Your BVA, Your Say’, carried out in 2012, it has been working hard to deliver what members said they wanted from the Association. ‘Members very clearly wanted BVA to speak up for the profession more in the media and with the general public, so we have worked hard to increase our visibility, including through a new survey panel to generate news stories,

which has resulted in a doubling of BVA’s media coverage,’ it says. ‘Members also wanted to see improvements in the way we communicate so we have invested in a more responsive website and member database. And members wanted access to high-quality, low-cost continuing professional development (CPD) so we have developed a national CPD programme. ‘We have achieved a lot but there is still more to be done,’ the Association says. It says it is committed to growing its membership to ensure that it can continue to be a strong voice for vets and deliver services that support veterinary surgeons throughout their careers.

Priority issues

The strategic plan also sets out the Association’s ‘top 10’ priority issues for 2015, these being: bovine TB; responsible dog ownership; nonstun slaughter; veterinary wellbeing;

veterinary surveillance; improving public perceptions of the profession; tendering for veterinary services; the increase in veterinary undergraduates; regulation and paraprofessionals; and antimicrobial resistance. The BVA says that these will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it continues to lead on emerging issues of importance to its members. The Association is also planning to carry out further research later this year to gather members’ views on what it does. n  The full strategic plan can be downloaded from www.bva.co.uk/ uploadedFiles/Content/BVA_Strategic_ plan_2015-2017_FINAL.pdf, while an abbreviated ‘at a glance version’ (pictured above) is available at www.bva.co.uk/ uploadedFiles/Content/BVA_Strategic_ plan_2015-2017_At_a_glance_FINAL. pdf doi: 10.1136/vr.h1047 February 28, 2015 | Veterinary Record | 211
