EDITORIAL Next, I draw your attention to a registry proposal.4 This is another project motivated by the training grades in the UK, and it is pleasing to see such initiatives come through, and credit should go to these groups. Cranioplasty may not seem exciting, but we have all seen complications of the same, so a registry is welcome. Finally there is an obituary for Mr John Bartlett – a previous and well respected President of the SBNS. Overall I hope you find the issue of interest, and even stimulating, in all aspects!

Welcome to the third issue of the journal in 2014. The content in the issue is the usual mix of subjects; it remains that the number of submissions we are receiving at present is such that it is easy to construct a journal that should carry interest to all. I am grateful also for the forbearance of those whose submissions reach the print edition much later than their online publication date. The “publication threshold” for the journal has inevitably had to rise a little in response to this, as you will understand. The published online versions are – to remind the readership – fully citable. There are a number of items I wish to commend to your attention. You will find a reply to the letters concerning vCJD to be found in the previous issue.1–3 The question raised was perfectly reasonable – and many have observed that there is a large discrepancy in the observed epidemic of CJD and that which had been predicted. Accordingly, and despite the logical arguments given, the levels of precautions taken do seem a degree excessive (who knows to what degree of course – quantifying such a risk is even more challenging). Whilst the arguments given in this response are logical, I think it would be helpful if attempts could be made to explain the apparent discrepancy between observed and predicted. There is much more concerning this topic to found on the government and NICE websites.
