INTRODUCTION

Photosensititation in New Zealand cattle is of considerable economic litlpqrtance.largely because of the incidence of facial eczema. More general or detailed accounts of photosensitivity di­ seases and mechanisims are also available'6)(1I)()21(13~ Known causes of photosensitization in New Zealand cattle other than facial eczema are few and of minor importance. However, each year a considerable number of cases of photo­ sensitization of unknown cause occur, especiaUy in the spring season. The purpose of this review is to describe the general photosensitization phenomenon and its mechanism, to discuss known causes of bovine photosensitization in New Zealand, to list other possible causes and to provide a guide to the inves­ tigation of bovine photosensitization under New Zealand con
