Abstract The present study examined the blood pressure (BP) characteristics of normal weight children and adolescents with a large waist circumference (WC) in a large population in Shandong, China. A total of 38,826 students (19,460 boys and 19,366 girls) aged 7–17 years participated in this study. Height, weight, WC, and BP of all subjects were measured. Normal weight was defined by the international cutoffs of body mass index; central obesity was defined as WC ≥90th percentile; relatively high BP status was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥95th percentile for age and gender. And 5.06 and 8.19 % of the normal weight boys and girls had central obesity. The Z-scores of SBP, DBP and the prevalence of relatively high BP for both boys and girls were all significantly higher in the normal weight with central obesity groups than in the normal weight with normal WC groups. Conclusion : These observations highlight that normal weight children and adolescents with central obesity might have an increased risk of elevated BP.

Waist circumference (WC), a crude measure of central or visceral adiposity, has recently been advocated as a better adiposity indicator and a more important predictor of elevated BP and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in children than BMI [4, 5, 11]. However, little is known whether normal weight children and adolescents (defined by BMI) with a large WC had a high risk of elevated BP. In the current study, we examined the BP characteristics of normal weight children and adolescents with a large WC in a large population in Shandong, China.

Introduction It is well known that obesity is a key determinant of elevated BP in children and adolescents [15–17], and body mass index (BMI) is perhaps the most commonly used measure for Z. Data for this study were obtained from a large cross-sectional survey of schoolchildren. A total of 38,826 students (19,460 boys and 19,366 girls) from 16 districts in Shandong Province, students of Han nationality, aged 7 to 17 years, participated in the National Surveys on Chinese Students’ Constitution and Health, which were carried out in September to October 2010. The first author is the leader of the investigation team in Shandong. All subjects voluntarily joined in this study with informed consents. The sampling method was stratified multistage sampling based on selected primary and secondary schools. Six public schools (2 primary schools, 2 junior high schools, and 2 senior high schools) from each of the 16 districts in Shandong were randomly selected and invited to participate in the study. From the selected schools, two classes in each grade were selected, and all
