Animal models in the assessment of antimicrobial agents It might seem that the potential therapeutic value of a new antibiotic ought to be predictable from its in vitro antibacterial activity, its pharmacokinetics and the nature and magnitude of its toxicity. In practice, predictions made on this comprehensive basis are not always as successful as might be expected and some of the reasons for this are not far to seek. In the first place the conditions in which antibiotic and bacteria interact in laboratory tests of sensitivity and the infected lesion are very different. In the lesion the number of bacteria is large and in the laboratory test small. In the laboratory the nutritional conditions 1

have benefited from the way in which they combine uncompromisingly critical analysis with sure guide lines in day-to-day management. Younger members of the British Society know him especially from his contributions to the scientific meetings of the Society because he retired from his first post in 1961, before they qualified in medicine. In 1965, 4 years after leaving the Chair of Bacteriology at St Bartholomew's, Garrod began another career as Honorary Consultant in Chemotherapy at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, retiring from this post only in 1971. Since then he has continued working, and a glance at any issue of Abstracts of Hygiene will show assessments of published work as precise, critical and constructive as ever. Meetings of the B.S.A.C. are enlivened by his presence and many overseas friends and colleagues paid him delighted homage at the recent 9th International Congress of Chemotherapy. We will wish him a full and happy 81st year. H. P. LAMBERT St George's Hospital Medical School, Chairman, British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy

Birthday greetings to L.P.G. Lawrence Paul Garrod recently celebrated his 80th birthday, a suitable moment for us to pay tribute to one of the leading authorities on antimicrobial chemotherapy in this or any other country. His reputation is founded on many qualities, but above all he has forged the link between the laboratory discipline of microbiology and the world of clinical medicine. He is as well known for his laboratory research as for his practical guidance in applying its results to clinical decision-taking. His learning is transmitted in a style at once simple, trenchant and clear, yet so individual that aficionados recognize his hand in the many leaders, annotations and reviews which he contributes to medical journals. It seems inappropriate to look backwards in marking the achievements of anyone as up to date as Garrod but this must be done to understand how unique is his knowledge, spanning as it does the whole era of modern chemotherapy. At St Bartholomew's, he specialized in and later became Professor of Bacteriology. The first five editions of Recent Advances in Pathology and his years as Editor of the British Journal of Experimental Pathology reveal how wide-ranging were his early interests. Later his research and writing were concentrated on antimicrobial chemotherapy. One consistent theme has been his effort to quantify and improve standards in laboratory control of antibiotic usage, recognized by his membership of the WHO expert committee. We also note especially his work on the penicillins, on septicaemia, bacterial endocarditis, on the scope and limitations of antibiotic combinations and antibacterial chemoprophylaxis. There are few aspects of chemotherapy to which Garrod has not made original contributions. His work has reached a wide audience through the four editions of Antibiotic and Chemotherapy and by way of his many general articles and lectures on problems in antibacterial treatment. Clinicians
