DUCT SIALOLITHS

56-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to the Oral Surgery Clinic by a civilian dentist. She had a chief complaint of recurrent postprandial swelling of the right parotid region of 2 weeks’ duration. Past medical history revealed that a similar condition had existed in the right parotid region for the past 10 years. Clinical examination revealed, by palpation, firm, oval masses bilaterally at the anterior margin of the masseter muscles in the region of Stensen’s ducts; these were consistent with sialoliths or other obstructive phenomena. A Panorex radiograph disclosed radiopacities bilaterally in the second molar regions. Sialoliths which were 5 mm. in diameter on the right and 7 mm. in diameter on the left were removed intraorally without, complication. The presence of parotid sialoliths is a rather rare finding, and bilateral parotid sialoliths are most unusual. Lionel J. Kessel, B.D.S., B.D.S., R.C.S. Sterling R. Schow, D.M.D. Ervin E.
