Liverpool Medical Institution, 9th October 2015 O’Hara, J.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the first meeting between Clinical Otolaryngology and the Otorhinolaryngology Research Society. Both organisations maintain the common goal of promoting high-quality research and peer review. The ORS holds two meetings each year, in the spring and autumn. For the last few years, the autumn meeting has been held in collaboration with the ENT-UK annual meeting. With the 15th British Academic Conference in Otolaryngology taking place in July, there is no planned ENT-UK annual meeting. This has provided the opportunity for this journal and the ORS to team up. Traditionally, there have been strong ties between the two organisations: a presentation at this year’s spring ORS meeting showed that 58% of presentations achieve publication, with 22% published in this journal. The journal also publishes the titles of all oral papers presented at ORS meetings. The aims of the meeting are to provide a trainee-delivered free paper section and a section on work in progress, to receive open comment and discussion on. There will be further presentations from national research champions and from the journal’s editorial team. This is an exciting time for research in the UK. With the structure of the National Institute of Health Research and the support of the Local Clinical Research Networks, addressing the key clinical research questions within our specialty is now a very real possibility. Coordinating research themes and delivering successful funding applications is a common ambition. Rigorously conducted

clinical trials will strengthen our position as a specialty, in times when procedures lacking definitive outcome data will come under increasing scrutiny from commissioners. A team approach to addressing the relevant clinical questions will be the most successful method of achieving research funding. There are many opportunities for trainees to be involved in the workup of large research grants, which should be recognised as valuable contributions towards training accreditation. In addition to those submitting abstracts for presentation, readers with an interest in furthering clinical research are urged to attend and contribute to this meeting. The continued success of Clinical Otolaryngology and the ORS is dependent on their readers, reviewers, meeting attendees/ contributors and members. We hope this meeting will stimulate more readers to register as journal reviewers and join the ORS. The support of Wiley in sponsoring this event is much appreciated, offering attendees a free academic day. All medically qualified abstract submitters must be current ORS members and attendees are strongly encouraged to join. The full programme and registration will appear on the ORS website in due course (www.ors.uk.net). Abstract submission will open 11th June to 11th July. Conflict of interests

None to declare.
