Author Response

Dear Editor: We greatly appreciate Dr Barouk’s comments in regard to our publication on the use of proximal medial gastrocnemius release for Achilles tendinopathy, published in the October volume of Foot and Ankle International. Dr Barouk, your letter to the editor remarks that the history of gastrocnemius release was not mentioned in the article. Review of the discussion section will show that we did consider in some detail the work of Silfverskiöld, Vulpuis, and Baker. There is also mention of more recent use of gastrocnemius release for forefoot pathology with seven references. The notable omission was of the publications from Bordeaux. We regret the lack of reference to your published work regarding the proximal gastrocnemius medial release procedure—learned from yourself by the senior author. This oversight was due to inadvertently confining our literature review

to publications in the English language. Our previous publications on the anatomy of the proximal gastrocnemius and the use of PGMR in cases of recalcitrant plantar fasciopathy (both published in FAI) make a better acknowledgement of your publications. With the benefit of hindsight we very much regret omitting the references you mention in our Achilles paper and we would like to use this response to acknowledge your pioneering contribution to this subject— the importance of which remains largely unrecognized in the foot and ankle surgical community. Yours Sincerely, Sabahat Gurdezi, FRCS (Tr&Orth) Julie Kohls-Gatzoulis, FRCS (Tr&Orth) Matthew Solan, FRCS (Tr&Orth)
