Assessment of Knowledge and Level of Satisfaction of Nursing Undergraduates in a Pressure Ulcer Online Course Juscilynne B. C. Aroldi, RN1, Heloisa H. H. Peres, PhD, MSN, RN2 1 Master’s candidate, School of Nursing, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil; 2 Professor, School of Nursing, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil Abstract The objective of this study is to identify the effectiveness of two different educational modalities in an online course on pressure ulcers by comparing the degree of knowledge and level of satisfaction of nursing undergraduate students. The result will ground the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies in the teaching process in nursing. Introduction Research carried out in Brazil shows that 29.3% of students who dropped out distance courses rated the courseware as fair, poor or bad. Quality assurance and certification in distance education research is rare corresponding to only 3% of the topics studied in distance education in Brazil1. The influence of technology in the educational process took place from pedagogical theories. In Behaviorist theory, Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) learning features a great deal of information to the student who has a passive role in the teaching-learning process based on absorbing and assimilating information. In constructivist theory, programs like Computer Assisted Learning (CAL), student participation is active, the use of the Internet and other tools provide greater flexibility, creativity, interaction and communication2. In the first phase of this study, two online courses on pressure ulcer were developed. In the CAI modality, the course content is in Word® and Powerpoint® and activities are individual. In CAL modality, the development of the course followed the phases of instructional design (analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation), with the participation of experts in graphic design, education, stomatherapy and health informatics. In this course, the students take part in collaborative activities: forums and case studies. Articulate® (e-learning software) was used to show class content, videos on the prevention and treatment were presented, and videos of Virtual Man (3D graphics computational resource) to increase knowledge about etiology and category. The aim of this experimental research is to evaluate the effectiveness of online courses on pressure ulcer in CAI and CAL models by comparing the level of satisfaction and understanding of nursing undergraduate students in the different modalities of the course. The population is made up of students enrolled in the Nursing in Adult and Elderly Health course, and will receive statistical treatment to be appropriate as an experimental study. The control group will consist of students who will attend the course in CAI modality and the experimental group of students who will attend the course in CAL modality. Intervening variables to the teaching process will be considered in randomization: age, sex and average student’s grades. Pre-and post-intervention questionnaires to assess the degree of knowledge understanding through clinical decision-making will be used in data collection. The questionnaire to assess student satisfaction in relation to courses will be adapted from Evaluating Educational Uses of Web-based Courses in Nursing, this instrument has questions asking students to indicate their perceptions about web courses as they relate to the use of technology, educational practices, and outcomes3. The project was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the School of Nursing at USP. Conclusion The hypothesis of this study is that the online course on pressure ulcers in CAL modality is more effective than the course in CAI modality. The results ground the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies in the teaching process in nursing. The research will be conducted in February 2012. References 1. 2. 3.
