ARCHIVES ON DISPLAY there are certain basic requirements, for example adequate lighting, ease of viewing, protection. Some categories demand special conditions - such as to prevent deterioration due to heat or light or damp or dehydration. Documents need to be close enough to the viewer to be readable, and adequately illuminated yet without glare. Frequently the various requirements are mutually incompatible, and simultaneous display of a variety of exhibits may be impractical. The College has had a display cabinet designed and constructed (Footnote) to best serve its particular needs in maintaining a demonstration, changing from time to time, of selections from the Archives. The initial exhibition (Figure 1) features early radiology journals and books, World War I skiagrams, material on early radiation measuring

methods, early radiation therapy casebooks, a 1906 announcement of a forthcoming lecture on “The History of the X-Rays”, and photographs of relatively recent historic interest. As the Archives collection grows in volume its usefulness as a reference source will increase as well as its unique value in the nature of many of the irreplaceable items so preserved.

FOOTNOTE The College is very appreciative ofthe assistance given by Schering Pty. Ltd., Kodak (Australasia) Pty. Ltd., The Commonwealth Banking Corporation, Bank of New South Wales, Scientific and General Pty. Ltd., whose generosity largely financed the purchase of the showcase.
