Message from APIC

APIC’s continuing efforts to help members In 2014 APIC members will be able to access a fully revised fourth edition of APIC Text of Infection Control and Epidemiology and several new implementation guides and manuals, including the newly released Infection Preventionist’s Guide to Long-Term Care, designed to help infection control professionals (IPs) with every facet of their work. The fourth edition of APIC’s most comprehensive infection prevention resource, APIC Text, will be published in time for the APIC Annual Conference (June 7-9, 2014). Soon after, APIC Text Online will launch with a new platform, providing access to the entire APIC Text resource from any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection. Because it is offered on a subscription basis, APIC Text Online is an affordable and practical option to get the infection prevention information you need. APIC Text is the definitive resource for infection prevention and control in the health care setting, with more than 120 chapters covering the latest guidelines, research, technology, and clinical standards. In the area of professional development, APIC is updating the certification study guide (to be released during summer 2014) to help IPs prepare for the Certification in Infection Control exam. In addition, APIC will be continuing to expand the IP Competency Model with the release of a tool that will help IPs better understand the performance improvement and implementation science domains. We are also adding leadership education sections into all of our platforms. These additions directly address an IP’s proficient and advanced career stages. APIC will also be publishing updated implementation guides on catheter-associated urinary tract infections and central lineassociated bloodstream infections, as well as a new guide on hand hygiene. Part of the implementation guide series, these

resources will be provided online with open access to ensure that the information is accessible to the widest possible audience. They are designed to provide IPs with evidence-based guidance and practical tools, checklists, and template materials to implement effective prevention programs in their facilities. Planning for new construction or major renovation requires early collaboration among IPs, epidemiologists, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the design of specific structures facilitates desired infection prevention program practices. To help IPs understand construction concepts and terms and provide examples, tools, and photos, APIC will be publishing the Infection Preventionist’s Guide to Construction and Renovation. Look for this new resource later in 2014. Also on the horizon for 2014 are continued enhancements to the Infection Prevention and You Web site, with a new infographic poster expected to launch in conjunction with International Infection Prevention Week in October. The goal of the campaign continues to be helping patients, families, and health care personnel better understand their role in preventing infections. Looking ahead to 2015, APIC is developing an orientation manual to help acquaint new IPs with their role within health facilities. Another publication in development is the Ready Reference Guide on Understanding Research. This will focus on explaining research methods, including types of studies, how to conduct literature searches, how to interpret and evaluate research studies, and how to use research in daily practice. This year is shaping up to be quite productive for APIC. As always, we welcome your input on the resources that are most needed to help guide your practice.
