News From the National Case Management Network of Canada

Annual Conference Report: NCMN Raised the Bar on Case Management The National Case Management Network’s (NCMN’s) annual conference and expo was an enormous success with sessions covering a wide spectrum of hot topics in health and social services, ranging from uninsured patients and consent and capacity issues to the importance of credentialing and integrated case management. “Our impressive roster of speakers from start to finish were both inspiring and inspired by case management—and the increasingly important role that case management professionals play in so many different areas of health care and social services,” said Joan Park, President. “‘Fabulous venue,’ ‘really well organized,’ ‘excellent sessions,’ ‘critical topics,’ ‘so much useful information,’ were just some of the positive comments we received,” said Park. The 2-day conference held at the Grand Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, last September attracted case management professionals from across Canada. There were four plenary sessions and more than a dozen smaller breakout sessions, and delegates were invited to the expo where exhibitors and sponsors were set up as well. “The conference underlined the value of integrating care in all sectors, connecting with professionals both inside and outside of the health arena, and solidifying our role and our professionalism,” said Park. As Canada’s leading professional association for case managers, NCMN has built a body of knowledge that supports our goals and the future of health care and social services in this country, said Park. Here is a quick overview of the plenary sessions: • Uninsured Patients: The issues and ethics related to withholding or providing care to the uninsured were presented by Dr. Paul Caulford, Medical Director of the Volunteer Clinic for Medically Uninsured Immigrants and Refugees; Sally Bean, Ethicist and Policy Advisor at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics; and Karen Kwan Anderson, Lawyer, Immigration Team at Pace Law. • Capacity Assessment: Assessing the capacity of a patient/client is an increasingly important issue as the population ages and as more case management providers take on this emotionally charged task. Michael D. Newman, B. Comm. LLB, LLM (Health Law), Vice-Chair and Senior Lawyer on the Consent and Capacity Board of Ontario, helped clarify the importance of capacity to consent (or refuse consent) to treatment. Louise Silverston, MSW/RSW, looked at issues that a health care provider experiences when faced with a client requiring a consent and capacity assessment. • Case Management Credentialing: This session highlighted the need for qualified case management providers—and the importance credentialing could play in protecting the public as well as the service providers. Karine Georges, Assessment Strategies Inc., explored the why, how, and who should be credentialed. James Vigmond, a personal injury lawyer at Oatley Vigmond, shared his personal insights drawn from cross-examining case managers in court and explained why he is advocating for credentialing. • Integrated Case Management for Complex Substance Abuse Patients: Janet Stevenson, coordinator, Toronto Community Addiction Team, provided a case study that integrated case management services Professional Case Management is the official journal of the National Case Management Network of Canada. WHAT THE DELEGATES SAID Delegates from across Canada were enthusiastic about NCMN’s annual conference. “I loved the format, loved the credentialing session. Also, awesome session on brain injuries.” “I like that it’s self directed and you choose the session you find most relevant,” said Ginger Stewart, Senior Case Manager, CMHA Durham Branch, Ontario. “The diversity and topics and the networking were great. I heard lots of new ideas,” said Susan Macartney, Champlain CCAC, Ont.’’ Pat York, Case Manager at Campbellford Memorial Hospital, Campbellford, Ontario, who has been to previous conferences said that the most recent conference was the best yet. “It was so well managed, a nice venue, and so much diverse information.” Professional Case Management is the official journal of the National Case Management Network of Canada.
