a b s t r a c t The American Nurses Foundation (ANF) grant program has been successful in funding nurse researchers' initial research studies for nearly 60 years. (ANF, 2013). From 1955-2012, over 1,000 ANF scholars have been identified through this historical nursing research study. Over the years, obtaining an ANF grant has become increasingly competitive for scholars. The environment supportive of research is evident from the schools that are the top recipients of grants. The ANF has a proud legacy of scholars who have and continue to make contributions to the advancement of nursing science. The paths forged by the ANF scholars illustrate the significant role that small grant programs play in the evolvement of nursing research and the expansion of nursing science. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. The American Nurses Foundation (ANF) grant program has been successful in funding nurse researchers' beginning research work, and ANF maintains close working relationships with the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) in efforts to nurture young investigators (American Nurses Foundation, 2013). Our historical research efforts in tracking the ANF scholars began with the desire to celebrate ANF's 50th anniversary in 2005 (Holzemer et al., 2005). Holtzclaw (2006) categorized ANF scholar's research as “Early Scholars” (1955–1970), “Models of Excellence” (1970s), “New Avenues” (1980s), and “Crowning the Century” (1990–2004). Holtzclaw (2006) observed an increase in the well-established programs of research that emerged in the 1980s from the ANF awardees due to the establishment of the National Center for Nursing Research (NCNR). In the 1990s, ANF grant applications increased in number due to the moving of NCNR to a full NIH institute in 1993, National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) with ANF scholars moving quickly from ANF funding to federal funding. These ANF scholars included Dr. Rita Pickler, Dr. Jean McSweeny, Dr. Victoria Mock and Dr. Christine Miaskowski. We now have identified over 1,000 scholars who received ANF funding, between 1955 and 2012. The ANF Scholars 2005–2012 could be characterized as the “Frontiers of Science” with research focused on genetics, technology, and complex biopsychosocial processes. ANF

scholars have impacted healthcare policy (Messmer & Zalon, 2010). For this study, ANF grants were categorized according to name, topic of grant, year and affiliation at time of receiving the grant. 4 The Tables (1–4) are arranged in tiers (tier I–IV) to identify those universities/ colleges/agencies that have been successful in attaining an ANF grant thru the nearly 60 years that the program has been in existence. Table 1 identifies tier I, the top 10 universities having scholars to receive an ANF grant. Table 2 identifies tier II, the next 21 universities/ colleges/agencies having scholars to receive the ANF grants. Table 3 identifies tier III the universities who had scholars to receive 3–8 ANF grants. Table 4 identities tier IV those universities who had scholars to receive 1 or 2 ANF grants. Over the years, obtaining an ANF grant has become increasingly competitive for scholars. The environment supportive of research is evident from the schools that are the top recipients of grants. For achieving this prestigious award, the top 10 schools to receive ANF grants (grants to doctoral students and faculty are included in the listing) include the University of Pennsylvania with the most grants (45), the University of California at San Francisco (40), Case Western Reserve University (38), University of Illinois at Chicago (28), University of Washington (24), University of Rochester (23), University of Pittsburgh (22), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (22), the University of Texas at Austin (18) and the University of Michigan (18). It is interesting to note that this

compares favorably in many cases with schools that are also leading recipients of NINR funding. Overall, the focus of ANF-funded research parallels the historical development of nursing research providing insight into the topics chosen for study by nurse researchers. Many ANF scholars have high profile leadership roles not only in research, but also in policy development. The track record of ANF scholars speaks to the value of seed money for research and its impact on the development on nursing science. This is even more critical as federal funding for research has become increasingly competitive. Using the National Institute of Health (NIH) research report database, Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP), it was determined that approximately one-third of ANF scholars have received federal funding (Messmer, Zalon, Phillips, & Van Brunt, 2010). This does not include private foundation awards or grants awarded to nurses in their home countries after receiving an ANF grant. Fitzpatrick (2012) noted the dramatic increase in nursing knowledge developed and disseminated both in the United States and globally in the past 25 years. Although ANF grants have been awarded primarily to nurse researchers from United States, they are available to nurses around the world as long as specific grant criteria are met. The diverse nature of the research supported by ANF has been evident from its early days. In her 1968 editorial, Lucille Notter reported on 15 developmental grants that had been awarded since 1955 (Notter, 1968). The diversity of these grants is illustrated by the awards to Mary E. Hazzard, from the University of Virginia “An Investigation of Bioelectric Potentials in Nonpregnant and Pregnant Rabbits.” Muriel Uprichard, from the University of California at Los Angeles “The Making of a Modern Nursing: A Study of Forces which Created the Modern Profession of Nursing” and Jennie B. Van Drimmelen, “An Evaluation of a Commonly Used Oral Hygiene Agent.” An example of the influence of ANF on a specific focus area is illustrated by the ANF grants awarded for child health nursing research. Messmer, and colleagues (2010) identified 16 ANF scholars at children's hospitals, 9 ANF scholars at hospitals other than children's hospitals and 121 ANF scholars at academic institutions with a pediatric-focused research study from 1955–2009. This percentage of grants awarded to nurse researchers studying child health in clinical settings (17%) is higher than the overall average of ANF awards to nurses in clinical settings (10%). Multiple sources were used to locate the information about the ANF grants and their recipients. While the early grant awards were routinely listed in Nursing Research, this practice was discontinued when Elizabeth Carnegie retired as editor. On the 5th year of ANF's service to research in nursing, Carnegie (1960) published ANF's report, “Research-Pathway to Future Progress in Nursing Care”. Carnegie noted in her 1975 editorial that “ANF was founded for the express purpose of promoting and supporting nursing research and the dissemination of research findings (Carnegie, 1975). ANF has been vitally concerned with helping nurses conduct research”. Since its inception, ANF moved along with the American Nurses Association (ANA) from New York City to Kansas City, Missouri to Washington DC, and then to its present location in Silver Springs, Maryland. Each time ANF's records were either archived or placed in storage, making retrieval challenging. The early ANF grants were described in Nursing Research for its silver anniversary issue (Hyde, 1977). Sources of information included ANF annual reports, archival records from Nursing Research, the American Journal of Nursing, The American Nurse, the Boston University History of Nursing Archives, Undine Sams: Passion, Power & Political Action (Ardalan & Messmer, 2007), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Library in addition to the Internet. Interviews and emails to deans and scholars were conducted with IRB approval from University of Scranton. The following selected examples illustrate the impact of ANF's research funding. It was the spur to further investigate various factors that might affect the preterm infant's transition from gavage to full oral feedings.” Jean McSweeney indicated that receiving the ANF Grant, “Experiencing Heart Disease: Women's Perspectives” in 1993 while a doctoral student at University of Texas at Austin “led to the whole trajectory of her career.” Now a professor at University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock, Arkansas, McSweeney's focus included developing and testing an assessment tool to identify women at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), examining Black, Hispanic and White women's symptoms of CHD and pinpointing women's early warning symptoms of CHD (McSweeney et al., 2010). She received NIH funding, presented and published, even to physicians. Margot L. Nelson, PhD, RN, 1999 ANF Scholar and Nursing Professor Emerita at Augustana College at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said, “It certainly did lead to additional research regarding the experience of HIV-infected individuals in Australia and the US when they were "rescued" by the new drugs, including protease inhibitors.” “Undying: A Journey from Certain Death to Uncertain Living” was presented in many venues. It also created a foundation for community and statewide research on end-of-life decision making, funded by the Avera Health Foundation, Sanford Health Foundation, the Wellmark Foundation, and the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. Lee Smith (later Lee SmithBattle) received an ANF grant in 2001 for her study, “Teenage Mothers 12 Years Later” with the results published in the 2005 issue of Western Journal of Nursing Research. Her study provided the foundation for the development of a research trajectory focused on teen mothering resulting in 16 publications (SmithBattle, 2005). Most recently SmithBattle (2012) has focused her attention on the policies that disregard the social determinants of early childbearing and result in further marginalization and social exclusion of lowincome families. Calling for comprehensive reform, SmithBattle advocates for an upstream approach to address the inequalities of our health care system and counter stereotypes that early childbearing is a consequence of individual choices and lifestyles. Ruth McShane, a 1990 ANF scholar identified her two coinvestigators, Carol Patsdaughter and Judith Bumbalo for the “Impact of AIDS on the Family”. McShane and colleagues received additional internal funding from University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee to complete their project. Dr. Nancy A. Ryan-Wenger, a 1990 ANF scholar in her doctoral program at The Ohio State University was appreciative of her ANF grant, “The Coping Principle for Schoolagers with Maladaptive Coping”. As the Director of Nursing Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Ryan-Wenger received a 2011 ANF grant. As an ANF scholar, she described a new model that she and her colleagues would use to study pediatric patient falls. The primary premise was that although most falls in pediatric patients in time could not be predicted in time to prevent them, pediatric nurses needed to shift their focus to prevention or minimization of injury from falls. This had not been addressed previously in the pediatric setting. In most cases over the 58 years of the ANF grant program's existence, less than 10% of the ANF grants were awarded to scholars at clinical institutions. However this may change in the future as more hospitals seek, attain, and maintain ANCC Magnet Recognition®. The ANF/ANCC Margretta Madden Styles Credentialing Research Grant funds research on the impact of credentialing programs in nursing for patients, nurses and healthcare organizations. Credentialing programs of interest include certification, accreditation and recognition such as the Magnet Recognition Program® and the Pathways to Excellence Program® (www.anfonline.org). These ANF grants have fostered the careers of many of nursing's leaders. These exemplary scholars have given back not only through

their research that has made an impact on practice, but also through their commitment to help the next generation of scholars. For example, Patricia D’Antonio, a 1987 scholar edits Nursing History Review. She also serves on the ANF's Nursing Research Review Committee (NRRC). Other scholars who have served on the NRRC include: Patricia Pearce, Rita Pickler, Susan Barnason, Robin Knobel, Kathryn Laughan, Katherine Hutchinson, Graham McDougall, Jr. and Linda D Scott. ANF scholars who have served as grant reviewers include Esther Chipps, Katherine Gregory, Olga Jarrin, Leanne Lefler, Rebecca Lehto, Cynthia Renn, Roberta Waite, and Joan Warren. Over the years, many more scholars have served in these capacities. The American Nurse Foundation has a proud legacy of scholars who have and continue to make contributions to the advancement of nursing science. We have only highlighted a few of the many outstanding scholars who began their research trajectory with a grant from ANF. The paths forged by the ANF scholars illustrate the significant role that small grant programs play in the development of nursing research and the expansion of nursing science.
