EDITORIAL An Interview with Dr. Robert Anderson

We were very fortunate, as members of this journal, to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Denton Cooley in 2014 and published four of those interviews in this journal. There will never be another cardiac surgeon like Dr. Cooley in the United States and, to have his reflections put down on paper for this journal, was wonderful for the rest of his medical colleagues and for the journal itself. We are very fortunate in 2015 to publish an interview with Dr. Robert Anderson. I can think of no one over the past 40 years who has had a greater effect on the advancement of congenital heart disease than Dr. Anderson. His brilliant observations have advanced the understanding of the embryology and anatomy of congenital heart disease and his anatomical descriptions have aided clinicians and surgeons throughout the world. There is no question that the clinical evaluation and the outcomes of surgery have improved dramatically over this time, in large part, because of his contributions to the body of knowledge in our field. As most of you know, Dr. Anderson is a very gracious, outgoing, charming, witty, urbane, sophisticated individual and it was delightful for me as his friend and colleague for many years to have a chance to formally interview him. His insights over his illustrious career are invaluable and once again I am very proud that we have been able to capture his insightful knowledge on the pages of this journal. view process, he was a gracious and cordial as always and expanded on a number of issues and topics, spontaneously. It was a wonderful interview and we are exceedingly grateful to Dr. Anderson for his time and cooperation and the sharing of his knowledge with us. Dr. Anderson has interacted with the giants in our field over these past 40 years and his insight into his colleagues and their quest for excellence is seen in every part of the interview. The best and the brightest have worked with Dr. Anderson and have found that interaction an amazingly enriching, enlightening and fulfilling experience. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this interview with Dr. Anderson on his most recent trip here to Texas Children’s where he conducts a week-long session with our staff and fellows and has been doing that now for a number of years. It’s a wonderful week and we all look forward to it every year. I hope you enjoy reading this interview as much as I enjoyed doing it. Thank you again, Dr. Anderson, and we can’t wait to see you back next year.
