As amputation was considered the only means to relieve the patient's sufferings, it was performed just below the diseased portion of the penis, by putting the patient under the influence of chloroform, and passing a silver catheter into the urethra : two straight needles were then passed together at the middle of the dorsum of the penis, just below the disease, and no sooner did their points reach the catheter than they were directed outwards on either side of the catheter, and again directed inwards towards the middle line of the opposite side of the penis, making their points of exit as near as possible and thus keeping the canal open for the passage of the urine. The two ends of each needle were tied up with fine wire in the same manner as used in hare-lip operations. Enclosing nearly the whole tissue within the needles and suture, the catheter was then removed and the diseased portion was taken off just above the needles by one sweep of the knife. There was scarcely any bleeding, and the future tendency to contraction of the urethral orifice was prevented. The needles were removed with the sutures on the 3rd day after operation, and the patient made a perfect recovery, and was discharged on the 27th March 1879. tumour.
