All SET: postdocs prepare for competition final Two postdoctoral researchers from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) have been invited to Parliament to present their research to politicians and leading experts in science, engineering and technology (SET). Katherine Staines and Behzad Heravi, will attend the House of Commons on March 17 as finalists in the ‘SET for Britain’ competition. The competition, which showcases the work of early-stage or earlycareer researchers, is held annually and judged by a panel of industry experts and academics. Dr Staines, who will present a poster about the mechanisms involved in osteoarthritis development, said: ‘I am really looking forward to presenting my work to a wide audience of MPs and academics. Osteoarthritis is a debilitating and painful disease so it is imperative that we better understand what processes are involved so that we can develop effective treatments.’
She added: ‘By presenting this work in Parliament I hope to raise further awareness as to the need for funding arthritis research in the UK.’ Dr Staines’ research has been entered into the Biological and Biomedical Sciences section of the competition, which will culminate in a gold, silver and bronze prizegiving ceremony. The gold medallist receives £3000, while silver and bronze receive £2000 and £1000, respectively. Dr Heravi, who works within the RVC’s Structure and Motion Laboratory, will present a poster about high-accuracy radio-based localisation for tracking animals. He commented: ‘As an enthusiastic early-career researcher I have a great passion to communicate my work to the public. I am looking forward to sharing the excitements and challenges within my area of research and using this fantastic opportunity to inform those in Parliament
of the widespread applications and potential impacts of my work.’ Andrew Miller MP, chairman of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, said: ‘This annual competition is an important date in the parliamentary calendar because it gives MPs an opportunity to speak to a wide range of the country’s best young researchers. These early-career engineers, mathematicians and scientists are the architects of our future and SET for Britain is politicians’ best opportunity to meet them and understand their work.’ The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee runs the event in collaboration with the Society of Biology, the Council for the Mathematical Sciences, the Institute of Physics, the Physiological Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Society of Chemical Industry. doi: 10.1136/vr.g2075
