ALFRED LEE LOOMIS BELL, M.D., F.A.C.R.

1890-1974 Dr. Alfred L. L. Bell, 84 years old, recently of Birdsboro, Pa., died on July 8, 1974. Dr. Bell who had been the senior radiologist in Brooklyn, N. Y, retired from practice in May 1974. Dr. Bell received his medical degree from Columbia University in 1916 and interned at Babies Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. He was a member of the Army Medical Corps during World War 1. From 1922 to 1956 he was director of the Department of Radiology of the Long Island College Hospital and professor of radiology at the Long Island College of Medicine. During that time he exerted a tremendously stimulating influence both on the hospital and his residents. During the early days of his directorship of the department he was one of the few radiologists in the area who insisted on giving his residents full medical and radiological responsibilities. His influence on them was such that this past spring many of these radiologists gave him a testimonial dinner at the Brooklyn Club in appreciation of his efforts. His interests were many and varied. Medically, he was a consulting radiologist at the Caledonian Hospital, Prospect Heights Hospital, St. Giles Hospital, St. Peter's Hospital, Coney Island Hospital and the Lutheran Medical Center. He was a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, Radiological Society of North America, American Medical Association, American Academy of Compensation Medicine and the Mayor's Committee of Radiation Safety, New York City. His other interests were evidenced by membership in The Brooklyn Club, The Berkshire Country Club, Air Craft Owners and Pilots Association, The Franklin Club, The Hudson Club and The Antique Automobile Club of America. He was a member of the Brooklyn Rotary Club and a Member of the Masons. Dr. Bell was also an enthusiastic farmer in Birdsboro, Pa. After retiring from the Department of Radiology at the Long Island College Hospital, he engaged in private practice until shortly before his death. He is survived by his widow, Grace Bell; two sons, James F. Bell, II of Reading, Pa., an attorney, and Dr. A. L. L. Loomis Bell, Jr. of Tenafly, N.}.; a daughter, Nancy S. Gosch of

Alfred Lee Loomis Bell, M.D., F.A.C.R. Noonan, Ga.; eleven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Harvey. . He will always be remembered by his colleagues, patients and, particularly, by his former residents. EMANUEL MENDELSON, M.D.
