Purpose of the Conference The Transatlantic Airway Conference returned to Key Biscayne, Florida, in January 1991. Like its five predecessors, the purpose of the meeting was to synthesize current knowledge of a well-defined aspect of airway function, drawing on the special knowledge of investigators interested in fundamental and applied research. The theme of this year's conference, "Airway Mucins," drew together experts on protein and carbohydrate chemistry, molecular cloning, gene regulation, transcription, intracellular targeting and transport, exocytosis, glandular secretion, and neurohumoral regulation. To focus and direct discussion among such a heterogeneous group of experts requires special talent, and the conference was well served by its chair, Carol B. Basbaum, who was not only responsible for choosing experts with complementary skills

but also for posing challenging questions, sharpening debate, and guiding the discussion into useful areas. In this supplement are published the formal presentations that served as the basis for this productive interchange. The Scientific Committee thanks Carol Basbaum for selecting the discussants and leading the conference so successfully, and also thanks the following participants: J. -P. Aubert, P. Barnes, D.
