Advancing science for human and environmental health – The 50th EUROTOX Congress

This edition of Toxicology Letters contains the abstracts of the 50th Congress of EUROTOX, which took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, 7th–10th September 2014. EUROTOX is the federation of European Societies of Toxicology with origins dating back to the mid 1970s. The theme of the 50th Congress was ‘Advancing Science for Human and Environmental Health’ and the programme highlighted significant developments and achievements in the toxicology of these important areas. New science and its applications across the diverse fields of environmental, industrial, regulatory and clinical toxicology were presented. Key highlights from invited speakers were in the areas of public health and food, the rise of new psychoactive substances, cardiovascular toxicity, children’s safety, nuclear receptors and the integration of environmental and metabolic signals, ecology, mechanisms of cell death, individual genetics and differential susceptibilities. As well as contributions from invited speakers, we also received more than 890 abstracts from around the world for presentations as posters and in some late-breaking science platform sessions. This allowed many early career scientists to participate and present their work in a lively and interactive atmosphere. The excellent scientific programme enjoyed by the participants derived from the focused efforts of the 2013 Scientific Programme Committee (SPC2014), supported by the 2014 Local Scientific Committee chaired by Professor Aristidis Tsatsakis from Greece.

The SPC2014 began its work in September 2012 with a clear aim to bring you an exciting and interesting programme, covering the diverse areas of toxicology with a balance of subjects and session types. Our job was made so much easier by the many excellent proposals we had from you all for CE courses, symposia, workshops, keynote lectures and roundtable discussions. We thank you for all your great ideas; to those, whose suggestions did not make it, please try again for future meetings! We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the SPC2014 members and the local organisers of EUROTOX 2014 and congratulate them in organising a first rate scientific meeting with excellent opportunities for informal networking in the fabulous capital city of Edinburgh. We would especially like to thank the people who reviewed the abstracts: Professors Kevin Chipman, Ian Kimber, Tim Gant, Helen Grant, David Jones, John Thompson, Maria Beaumont, Paul Baldrick, Richard Currie, Alan Boobis and Heather Wallace. Aristidis Tsatsakis (Chair of the Scientific Subcommittee and President Elect of EUROTOX) Heather Wallace (President of the EUROTOX 2014 Congress and Chair of Local Organising Committee)
