Diabetes mellitus (DM) have been reported as one of the most common comorbid condition among patients with chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (COPD). Increasing risk of respiratory infection, reduction in the lung function (1) and decrease in the pulmonary circulation (2) are several pulmonary manifestation affecting patients with DM. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of patients with and without DM during hospitalisation for acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD), and to describe the short term outcomes (3 months mortality and readmission) after hospital discharge. Patients hospitalised in Penang General Hospital, Malaysia from 1st January 2007 till 31st December 2011 with the primary diagnosis of AECOPD were evaluated retrospectively. All data were retrieved manually from patients’ medical records. Ethical approval was obtained from Medical Research and Ethics Committee (MREC). A total of 259 patients admitted with AECOPD, with the median age of 70.1 (IQR= 59.8-76.9). Diabetes was reported in 44 (17%) patients. The two groups of patients with and without DM were comparable for most of the clinical factor and medications intake except for variables highlighted in table below.
