is the Fifth Annual Report of the anti-V.D. under the Government of West Bengal. /?e activities pursued during the year, fall under three broad heads?medical, and educative legislative, ynder medical measures altogether 13 clinics functioned the province?10 in Calcutta and 3 in the districts of Darjeeling, Hooghly and 24-Parganas, the last two being situated at Serampore and Kankinara, catering .9r the workers of the mills. The others for the largest districts of Midnapore and Burdwan, though sanctioned during the year, could not be opened owing to certain difficulties. Of the functioning treatment centres the ?2-bedded Special Hospital at Alipore. deserves special in this connection. Formerlylhis hospital used to cater for professional women onljT, but for sometime Past it has been working both for male and female patients. It is the only indoor hospital under the anti*-D. campaign also functioning as a central clinic where pases referred from other clinics are admitted (if hospitalization is deemed essential). All cases "of gonorrhoea and cases, of syphilis with pregnancy are treated With penicillin in this hospital.

The total number of patients treated during the year ^nder review comes to 225,914 as compared to 176.043 ?f 1947 and 271,526 of 1946 in the United Bengal. The timber of new cases treated during the year is 35,381 comprising both the sexes, as against 29,662 in 1947 and ?>47l in 1946. Again, 25,836 of the new cases of 1948, Were male and 9,545 female.

As usual ' Vaccination Week' was celebrated throughout the province. All concerned were offered help to make this week a success. Emergency smallpox regulations were enforced. Plaque.?Mortality during the year was higher than mortality last year. The districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Betul, Nimar, Bilaspur and Yeotmal were free. Bhandara, Saugor, Jubbulpore, Balaghat and Hoshangausual districts bad were infected severely. As preventive and other routine measures such as rat destruction, disinfection and disinfestation of the infected houses with cyanogas, D.D.T., etc., were carried out energetically in all the infected districts as well as in other districts of the province. Emergency plague regulations were also enforced. was Malaria.?Total number of deaths recorded 305,583 (247,007). It represents 51 (52) per cent of the total mortality. The disease is endemic and widespread in many districts. With a view to popularize the use of malarial drugs in reducing the sickness due to malaria, quinine was purchased from Central Government and paludrine from Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and made available to the public at nominal cost through all civil surgeons. In addition quinine sulphate and mepacrine tablets were issued free in highly endemic areas of the province. One assistant health officer and two anti-malaria supervisors were trained at the Malaria Institute of India, Delhi. A short two-day course in the use of D.D.T. was given to the staff of the police department. A course of lectures on malaria -control measures were delivered at the refresher course for post-graduates in

Spence Training College, Jubbulpore.

Leprosy.?The total number of persons found suffering from the disease was 87,623. Three hundred and three new cases of leprosy were detected during the year. The leprosy cases were given treatment at the existing ?leprosy clinics in the province run by Government and voluntary organizations. In all 7,214 contacts were examined. Of the 5,416 cases treated at the special leprosy clinics including sub-centres and at the dispensary leprosy clinics 3,489 were of neural type and 1,927 of lepromatous

type. During the year Government took over charge of the Raipur Leprosy Home and Hospital which was formerly run by the Mission Authorities. Government have appointed a Leprosy Advisory

Committee to chalk out programmes of anti-leprosy work in the province and to co-ordinate the activities of various organizations doing this work.
