for though the stools were repeatedly examined for pus, none was ever found. This would probably be the case, when a small abscess bursts into the middle portion of the duodenum ; the pus would be partly absorbed, and probably partly converted into semi-fa3cal matter. This absence of pus in the stools increased the difficulty of the diagnosis, and led me to think that the attack of pain and the tumefaction in the right hypochondriac region were the result of perityphlitis or of inflammation of the ascending colon, connected with the obstinate diarrhoea from which T. J. suffered both during this and a previous admission into 1st assistant's ward of the general hospital. I think it is worth while recording that the patient lived for more than 2 months after the rupture of the abscess into the duodenum, and was comparatively much relieved after the acute symptoms passed away.
