Abstract Objective—The principal objective of this investigation was to compare the naturalistic intraabdominal adipose tissue (IAAT) change among black and white women during midlife. Methods—A cohort of 222 (56%) white and 171 (44%) black midlife women were investigated in the Fat Patterning study at the Chicago site of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation. The subjects’ total body fat was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and IAAT by a planimetric computed tomography (at the level of L4–L5) annually over up to 4 years.
