The Taiwan Society for Mass Spectrometry (TSMS) was officially established on July 21, 2003, by 40 founding members and amid the aftermath of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. This very first member assembly, held with a symposium introducing the state of the art in mass spectrometry to the local scientific community, was deferred twice because of the concerns brought by the SARS epidemic. Finally, the TSMS was born to inaugurate a series of rich and expanding activities related to mass spectrometry in the following years in Taiwan. The mission of the TSMS is to promote and disseminate knowledge, from fundamental principles and various applications, of mass spectrometry. TSMS now has 700+ members and hosted routinely every year one annual conference in June/July, two spring and fall symposiums, and three regional training courses in Taiwan. TSMS organized the 4th Asia and Oceania Mass Spectrometry Conference (AOMSC) in July 10–12, 2013, at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC), Taiwan, and published the first textbook in Chinese on the topic of mass spectrometry in 2015. The 13th TSMS Annual Conference, organized by the former society president Prof. Jentaie Shiea, was taken place during June 27–29, 2016, at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in the southern Taiwanese city Kaohsiung. The conference had a very strong scientific program where more than 300 members and attendees convened to exchange their views and the latest research findings on various topics in the field. This special issue contains a collection of 11 articles contributed from the participants of the 13th TSMS Annual Conference. Many thanks to the contributors—without them, this special issue would not be available. The corresponding authors and their affiliations are listed in the following to acknowledge their great efforts: SungFang Chen (National Taiwan Normal University), Chao-Jung Chen (China Medical University), Yu-Chie Chen (National Chiao Tung University), Kenzo Hiraoka (University of Yamanashi), Cheng-Chih Hsu (National Taiwan University), Chien-Chen Lai (National Chung Hsing University), Pao-Chi Liao (National Cheng Kung University), Cheng-Huang Lin (National Taiwan Normal University), Jentaie Shiea (National Sun Yat-Sen University) and Pawel L.
