DISTRACTION and play therapy are tried and trusted techniques for children’s nurses to use in difficult and tricky circumstances. Nurses in Serbia are having their attitudes and practice challenged with a new programme to teach such techniques to prepare children for surgery.

Dragana Nikolic instituted a programme that has been so successful that it has now been accepted by Serbia’s health ministry which plans to implement the programme nationwide (page 15). Her story speaks volumes about how such simple techniques and a different way of thinking can reduce the stress for everyone involved and help produce better outcomes.

The techniques may be regarded as standard practice in the UK and many other parts of the world, but they are not, it seems, always deployed despite good evidence. There may be many reasons for this, but it was one area criticised by parents in the report into children’s cardiac surgery at Leeds General Infirmary. Parents knew from previous experience that staff at another hospital had used distraction to help with their child’s blood tests and

when the technique was not used, the procedure became an ordeal (page 8). The UK is to become the first country in the world to introduce a meningitis B immunisation programme nationwide following an announcement from the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. The health department is negotiating with a manufacturer and there are indications that the vaccine could be introduced in autumn 2015. The announcement, which has the potential to save many lives, has been welcomed (page 7). This month’s cover features the issue of life-limiting illness and how it affects siblings (page 16). Catherine Lane and Joanne Mason discuss the experiences and challenges that siblings face and how nurses can help. Mark Whiting continues on a similar theme in the first of three articles looking at the impact that having a child with a disability and complex health needs can have on the family (page 26). We also feature the issue of health literacy among families and how important communication is to ensure good outcomes (page 31).
