Certification in wound care

ll physicians who are seeing patients with chronic non-healing wounds and plan to continue to do so for several years should strongly consider becoming certified. This is becoming an increasingly required credential and there are numerous wound healing certifications available, all of which are competing for membership. There are many reasons why the Council for Medical Education and Testing (CMET) is considered by many, if not most, physicians to be the first choice for physician certification in wound healing. CMET is the first and only physician-specific organisation providing wound healing certification for all prescribing physicians in the USA and abroad. The CMET examination was 4 years in the making and written by physicians in daily practice charged with writing text-referenced questions that reflected best practice. The exam was beta tested several times to ensure question validity. Questions not only met rigorous psychometric testing but also reflected best practice standards and not personal bias. It is by far the most widely accepted physician wound healing certification in the USA today with approximately 700 members certified. In addition, the CMET examination process is approaching its eighth year, and has withstood the test of time and is now well-established in the medical community. Other organisations are multidisciplinary; certifying physicians, nurses, physical therapists and other non-physician providers. Many offer the same test at the same time for all examinees. Physicians, however, deliver a different type of care than the other providers. They are responsible for diagnosis and management, and the instructions that the other providers need to follow. A physician-specific certification process takes into account the real differences between the role of the physician and the other members of the wound healing team. The following organisations are multidisciplinary: The American Alliance of Wound Care, American Board of Wound Management and the American Board of Wound Healing. The Wound Healing Society in 2013 did an extensive review of the certifications available in wound care and raised an issue regarding the use of the word ‘Board’ in naming these organisations. When speaking of certification processes, the term ‘Board’ is often used for those organisations that are recognised by The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). None of the organisations providing certification in wound healing are recognised by ABMS. All of the wound care certification organisations, therefore, are on an equal footing. One of the goals of the CMET is to move wound care toward becoming a recognised, boarded subspecialty in medicine.
