DIAGNOSTIC SIGN IN TYPHOID FEVER. In India, wherever the existence of typhoid fever among natives is eo keenly discussed, the systematic application in all doubtful cases of Ehrlich's diagnostic sign of enteric fever, brought to notice recently by Dr. Howard Taylor in the Lancet for 4th May, 1889, would be exceedingly valuable. The test solutions are as follows :? " A, a saturated solution of sulphanilic acid in dilute (1 in 20) hydrochloric acid; B, a ?5 per cent, solution of sodic nitrite in distilled water. (Both of these solutions must be fresh?especially the latter, which cannot be depended on for more than a week at the longest. When they are mixed, of course, a solution of sulphanilic acid containing free nitrous acid is produced, which is the

actual test solution ; but on account of the extrenie instaof the latter, the two solutions must be mixed fresh at each testing.) In using the test, about 25 parts of A are added to 1 of B. Mix with this an equal bulk of the urine to be examined, and render alkaline with strong ammonia."
