A message from the Editor Cell Biology has never been so alive. New imaging and microscope techniques permit us today to have a deep view of cellular structures. Examples are the constant advance in optical microscopy with the development of super resolution analysis and new processing techniques for electronic microscopy. Combined with new molecular approaches and the increasing accessibility to -omics data, they allow us to understand many previously unknown and important biological processes at the molecular level. More robust quantitative assessment of image information as well as the possibility of observing specific events in live cells provide us with new ways to perform science and to promote advances in cell biology. Cell Biology International, by representing the International Federation of Cell Biology, pursues its mission to provide access to publication of cell related research for the scientific world. Our focus has been to receive and revise through an international board of editors, articles that cover relevant aspects of the biology of the cell from many places around the world. The pressure to publish as a result for career development and competition for limiting funds, make the scientist seek fast and sometimes incomplete publications to the detriment of the advancement of knowledge and science. Therefore, we will continue to offer the opportunity to publish original studies describing local

models and systems centered in the cellular level. Nevertheless, we will stimulate the search for mechanistic answers. I understand that running a journal and trying to improve it in a sea of new on-line publications is a difficult task. Cell Biology International is going to be exclusively electronic and this will push the reviewing process to achieve decisions in a reasonable time, while preserving quality. For this, I intend to have a strong participation of the Editorial Board and will count on a small group of associate editors to handle submissions. Because we will continue to attend the international community, we also aim to provide help to authors from countries in which English is not native. Also, to become a stronger forum for the Societies of Cell Biology, we are planning in the near future to have special issues with reviews and articles from specialized fields and geographical regions. We expect to have an introductory article describing the actual state of the particular research in Cell Biology followed by reviews and original articles. With this in mind, we expect to continue our mission of providing a forum for publications covering several aspects of Cell Biology throughout the world. Sergio Schenkman Editor-in-Chief
