A Message from the Editor—January 2014

Readers, 2013 was another successful year for ISA Transactions. The impact factor of the journal increased to 1.626 on par with what is expected from a journal en route to being placed among the premier journals in measurement, control, and automation. The number of submitted papers also increased to a record level at 630 —a figure up 10-fold from just a decade ago. The sustained growth of impact of the journal is also evident from other quality indicators such as the 5 year Impact Factor, Article Influence & Eigenfactor, Source Normalized Impact Factor (SNIP), and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR). Readers may visit the journal impact web link at 〈http://journalinsights.elsevier.com/journals/0019-0578〉 to view the actual metrics. The average review duration of a submitted paper from submission to final decision was 18.2 weeks based on data for 2012 (the data for 2013 was not available at the time of writing this note). I congratulate this success to all stakeholders and deeply acknowledge the contributions of authors, reviewers, editors, editorial board members, ISA, and Elsevier. The journal editorial team is currently comprised of only eight implying a very heavy workload for each editor. The good news is that we will be welcoming three new associate editors to the editorial team. Dr. Karlene Hoo will step down as an editor from January 2014. On behalf of the editorial board members and the editorial staff, I thank her for her contribution towards the success of the journal in the last few years. Drs. Lili Dong, Peter He, and Ramesh Panda will join the editorial team from January 2014. I trust that the new editors will bring new ideas and inject fresh enthusiasm to the team. There will be no change to the composition of 12 member editorial board of the journal. We plan to publish two special issues in 2014. The first special issue is on disturbance rejection and the second one is based on the invited papers from the 10th IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation (ICCA 2013) which was held from 12th to 14th of June 2013 in Hangzhou, China. We will continue to have special issues on emerging areas within the scope of the journal. I urge the prospective authors to visit the journal web link at 〈http://www.journals.elsevier.com/isa-transactions/〉 and read the

scope of the journal before submitting their papers. The scope of ISA Transactions is broad and includes but is not limited to important and emerging topics in Measurement, Systems, and Automation. Papers represent multi and interdisciplinary perspectives, industrial applications, and topics including fundamentals of sensors, data reconciliation, control theory and design, implementation, process optimization, computer perception, system safety, and management. We strive to maintain this comprehensive scope, with each paper addressing both the theoretical and practical issues. The latter point is a distinguishing feature of the journal as a medium of dissemination of new knowledge to bridge the gap between the theory and practice. The success of the journal is due to multifaceted efforts from individuals and organizations. First and most importantly is the contribution from authors who submit the results of their research to the journal. We are also indebted to our colleagues in the scientific community who accept to review papers for the journal. Their meticulous critique helps authors see the points that need to be addressed in order to improve the quality and presentation style of their manuscripts. In addition, the tireless and enthusiastic endeavor by the editorial team is commendable. The editorial team enjoys great support and guidance from the editorial board. ISA Transactions is the science and engineering journal of the International Society of Automation (ISA) and the continuous support in every conceivable way from ISA is much appreciated. Finally, I should thank Elsevier who publishes the journal. My colleagues at Elsevier are always ready to help the authors, reviewers and editors. We will work hard to sustain and exceed the tremendous success and growth of the last few years. I would like to close with a quotation from Vladimir Nabokov who said “complacency is a state of mind that only exists in retrospective – it has to be shattered before being ascertained”.
