When times get tough, one of the best ways to work through them is to gather your colleagues around you and pull together to face the onslaught as a team. However, research by Reynolds et al (page 24) shows that this doesn’t always happen. According to their findings, horizontal violence – aggressive behaviour among peers on the same power level – is a significant problem between nurses working in fast-paced, stressful environments.

Although their study was restricted to the perinatal department of a US hospital, the researchers report that peer-to-peer abuse has been widely documented between healthcare professionals in various countries and settings. They urge nurse managers to create workplace environments where nurses feel supported to practice their skills without taking out their frustrations or anxieties on their colleagues. If evidence is needed that working as a team is more beneficial, turn to page 18 where Stoddart et al exemplify what can be achieved when nurses act as a unit to improve care for patients.

NURSING MANAGEMENT

Aggressive behaviour is a significant problem between nurses working in fast-paced, stressful environments

Sophie Blakemore Assistant editor

Their article describes the introduction of care and comfort rounds at an acute hospital in NHS Forth Valley, Scotland, and how this has boosted staff satisfaction with their care delivery, as well as the satisfaction of patients, their families or carers with the care they are now receiving. The authors state that commitment to front line improvement needs a ‘systematic and informed team approach’ – something that was achieved successfully in this case to the benefit of all involved. It seemed that 2013 was a year of turmoil and bad press for the nursing profession, with the Francis Report into Mid Staffordshire Hospital, the subsequent Keogh report, the Clwyd report into hospital complaints and the Liverpool Care Pathway review dominating the headlines. After so much negativity, a new year is an opportunity for a fresh start, but this means collaborating and co-operating in teams and departments to showcase the best of the profession. Let’s make 2014 a year that nursing can be proud of.
