EDITORIAL BOARD OUTLOOK A Few Minutes With George Allen PhD, MS, BSN, RN, CNOR, CIC

BIOGRAPHY If you can dream it, you can accomplish it. I am and will always be a dreamer. My career choice, nursing, has been guided and facilitated by one of my many dreamsdto take a stand and make a mark. Having a mentally challenged child has solidified my resolve to be more than I am, to be inquisitive, patient, diligent, kind, and caring, and to recognize and act on opportunities to make a difference in the lives of ordinary folks. Because learning, principally through reading, is one of my passions, I have gravitated to writing and one day hope to write that great American novel that will transform the dispirited and down-trodden heart into a joy-filled soul. Currently, I work in several perioperative nursing roles in both education and clinical settings in Brooklyn, New York. I am an educator, working as a clinical assistant professor at the College of Health Related Professions, State University of New York; an epidemiologist, working as the director of infection control at Downstate Medical Center; and a perioperative registered nurse, working per diem at New York Methodist Hospital. Question: What was your first writing experience and what keeps you going? Answer: My first professional writing experience was in 1993 when I published a piece in

Nursing Management that discussed the role of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration bloodborne exposure standard in preventing bloodborne infections in health care. The experience was positive. The editorial staff members were superb, and that quality of experience has endured to today. The ongoing positive experience with editorial staff is a powerful and enduring incentive to keep going and a testament to the people whom I have encountered along the way. Question: If you can give one piece of advice to an aspiring author, what would you say? Answer: If you can envision it, you can achieve it. The editorial staff at AORN Journal is amazing and there to help you refine and polish your thoughts. Question: What is your most significant contribution to the Editorial Board? Answer: I bring to the Editorial Board a depth and frame of reference that is critical to the perioperative milieu. I share my expert knowledge on infection control and have novel clinical and practical knowledge and insights that I garnered from my minority status, through race and being a man in nursing. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.aorn.2014.07.001
