The field of radiological health in recent years has experienced a spectacular growth of data and scope of interest. Public concern and interest in electric nuclear power generating plants and waste disposal has intensified within the current climate of increasing energy shortages. New federal agencies, laws, regulations, and standards have emerged in ionizing radiation, radiofrequency, sonic, coherent, and noncoherent light radiation. There has been renewed interest in population and occupational exposures to ionizing and nonionizing radiation in the healing arts and industry. All of these new and renewed activities have resulted in a proliferation of publications and sources of information useful to the public health worker. This bookshelf is an attempt to list, categorize, and present details on the many varied sources of information available to personnel working in the field of radiological

ical Health Training Publication TP-198), but will concentrate on those sources published or revised after 1965. It is hoped that this bookshelf will help schools, public health officials, teachers, students, and others in updating their existing sources of information. It is obvious that any such attempt at developing a master list of this type has to contain only representative sources of information. The authors invite readers to inform them of any omissions or errors. Finally, this bookshelf attempts, where applicable, to restrict the number of sources to those more associated with public health aspects. The bookshelf is divided into four main sections. They are textbooks, current literature, training and educational materials, and other sources. Each one of these sections is further stratified into additional details.

L Textbooks Textbooks are extremely useful in the field of radiological health, since they provide basic information on many different subjects, and contain and cite many additional sources of information. This section is stratified into 18 subtopics. A textbook is then placed into one of the 18 areas according to its content and emphasis. Each book in every subtopic is listed in alphabetical order, using the author's name, name of book, publisher, and date of publication or revision.

D. Publications and Regulations of Govemmental Agencies There are a number of federal and state governmental agencies involved in radiological health activities. These agencies publish a wide range of extremely useful and timely topics of interest to public health personnel. Any attempt to provide a current comprehensive list of these publications would render such a list obsolete in a short time. Instead, the reader is encouraged to contact the appropriate agency or agencies for a current list of regulations and publications and for placement on their regular mailing list. B. Short Term Courses One of the best sources for information on this type of course is found in current journals under coming events or course announcements. Two other sources are the following publications: Meetings on Atomic Energy-A quarterly worldwide list of conferences, exhibitions, and training courses in atomic energy. This is available on a subscription basis from IAEA. World Meetings: United States and Canada-A quarterly publication that is a 2-year registry of future medical, scientific, and technical meetings. Available on a subscription basis from MacMillon Information, 866 Third Ave., New York, NY 10022. Government agencies which offer radiological health training courses are: Oak Ridge Associated Universities (NRC) Defense Civil Preparedness Agency at its facilities in Battle Creek, Michigan, and NIOSH in Cincinnati. Some nongovernment sources of training are the Laser Safety Training Course held at various times at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and the various summer courses given at Howard, Michigan, MIT, and Georgia Tech.

C. Educational Materials The Bureau of Radiological Health, a component of FDA, distributes through its Training Resource Center many types of radiological health training materials such as publications, booklets, overhead projection transparencies, 2 x 2 in projection slides, movies, video tapes, and training guides. For a list of training resources contact Training Resource Center (HFX-70), DTMA, BRH, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852.

C. Computer Searches For those individuals unable to perform library searches for specific radiological health items, there exist several information search systems which for a reasonable fee can supply this service. A few of these systems are listed below: The New York Times Information Bank. Engineering Index, Inc. National Technical Information Service. Chemical Abstracts Service. Institute for Scientific Information. Smithsonian Science Information Exchange. Defense Documentation Center. American Institute of Physics Information Service. A local librarian will probably be able to supply further information on any or all of these systems.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors would like to express their appreciation to the following persons for their valuable suggestions for items contained in this Bookshelf: Charles E. Roessler, PhD; Chet Mott; Gerald A. Jacobson, DVM; Samael Sperling; Gerald P. Hanson, and Mrs. Rebecca Hawkins.
