We are pleased to publish the proceedings of the 17th World Congress of Psychophysiology (IOP2014), which takes place at International Conference Center Hiroshima in Japan from September 23rd to 27th, 2014. IOP2014 is the first official congress of the International Organization of Psychophysiology (IOP) in East Asia. Since the first IOP congress took place in Montreal, Canada in 1982, 16 World Congresses have been held, once every two years. Although psychophysiology has been originated in the Western culture, with the advance of globalization, research in psychophysiology and neuroscience becomes popular also in the East, not only in Japan but also in many Asian countries such as China and Korea. The number of submissions to international journals from these countries is increasing. However, the opportunity to meet face-to-face and discuss various topics in the field has been relatively limited. This is especially true for students and young researchers in East Asia. Therefore, we believe that this world congress will be a wonderful opportunity to advance our mutual understanding. One of the reasons we organize the IOP congress in Japan this time is that we would like to reciprocate the invaluable support we received immediately after the disaster (earthquakes and tsunami) that hit the Eastern part of Japan in March 2011. Taking this opportunity, we thank all of you for your kindness. Although the congress venue of IOP2014, Hiroshima, is a city of West Japan that is located 900 km from the affected area, Japanese people are working together for reconstruction. We look forward to having you in a new Japan, which we hope is better than ever. The scientific program of IOP2014 includes 6 Keynote Lectures, 32 Symposia (147 papers), 3 oral sessions (14 papers), and 3 poster sessions (199 posters) as well as presidential address, vice president's lecture, and a public symposium for a general audience. We are expecting about 400 participants from more than 25 counties. Since April 2012 when I (Nittono) decided to prepare to host IOP2014 in Japan, we have been supported by many colleagues and organizations. We thank Ms. Noriko Shimooka at Hiroshima Convention & Visitors Bureau for her generous encouraging support. The Local Organizing Committee consists of 48 researchers who are working in this field in various universities and research institutes around Japan, literally from the North end (Hokkaido) to the South end (Okinawa): Shin-ichi Niwa and Tadao Hori (Honorary Presidents), Hisaki Ozaki (President), and Hiroshi Nittono (Executive Committee Chairman), Kyosuke Fukuda, Atsuko Gunji, Shinji Hira, Koichi Hirata, Akira Imai, Tatsuya Iwaki, Tetsuko Kasai, Akiyosi Katada, Jun'ichi Katayama, Tetsuo Kida, Motohiro Kimura, Toshihiko Kinoshita, Yoshihiko Koga, Kenta Kubo, Hiroaki Masaki, Izumi Matsuda, Shinji Miyake, Makoto Miyatani, Satoru Miyauchi, Harumitsu Murohashi, Yuichiro Nagano, Ken
